BELOIT, OH--Walt DeShields, a decorated girls high school basketball coach for the West Branch Warriors out of Beloit, Ohio in the last few days has been under a microscope after being told he would not be back as the lead man for the girls basketball team.
After leading this season's team to a 22-3 record, Eastern Buckeye Conference title and numerous post season awards, also being named EBC and Northeast Inland District Coach of the Year and the thought is why?
When the news got out many were surprised by the decision in part he had had such a tremendous run, not having a losing season in 20 years, DeShields also taught in the district for 31 years.
There is 'speculation' though not official, that DeShields who is retired but teaching business according to district website is under the 'Retire-Rehire Plan' in which allows an individual to retire, receive retirement benefits, and then return to work in the same or a different role, potentially continuing to receive benefits.
He has been under this plan 3 years but those under this plan would not return because of looming state budget cuts.
After backlash from the community and those who were puzzled at a surprising decision making a media buzz, the West Branch Local School District called for a special meeting taking place April 2 approximately at 8 p.m.
Unfortunately, the special meeting was cancelled on advice of legal counsel, a press release was sent out by treasurer Adam Fisher. PRESS RELEASE
Saying the board would determine if they will schedule a future special meeting, this will be an interesting subject moving forward.
There was an email sent to DeShields for comment but not returned.
