Quinn Woidke, Luke Chicone among winners at Greater Cleveland Sports Awards

CLEVELAND, Ohio--The stage was set as many filled Rocket Mortgage Fieldhouse to see who would walk away a winner of the covenant Greater Cleveland Sports Award in its 25th year.

In the high school male category Quinn Woidke of St. Ignatius High School would win in a tough field beating out talented Marquis Davis (Cleveland Heights) and Marcus Johnson (Garfield Heights).

Woidke is a combo guard in his last season at St. Ignatius, also a Kent State commit currently, who has helped his team to 16-3 record, was a key factor in winning an OHSAA State Championship in his junior year.

"This means everything, obviously its a great individual accomplishment but I wouldn't be here without my teammates, my coaches everyone that was apart of the team last year so as much it is an award for me it's an award for my team," said Woidke.

Also a winner in the Collegiate Male Athlete of the Year was John Carroll point guard Luke Chicone, a Mentor High School alumnus is currently mending from a injury as he is going to come back for his fifth year of eligibility to finish out his collegiate career.

"It's a surreal feeling to say the least, I grew up a diehard Cavs fan being presented this award in this arena means a lot," said Chicone.

The Jim Donovan Courage Award recipient went to Avon High School's Josiah Saunders, a cornerback/safety who suffered a serious injury tearing his ACL, PCL, and LCL during a game on Sept. 23, 2023 his recovery has been a testament to his courageous determination. 

Saunders was grateful to be the first to be a recipient of this award, "This award means a lot to me, me and my community especially my community definitely put a lot into this award as I did," said Saunders. "I feel very appreciated receiving this award I think that Jim Donovan throwing his shadow on me with this award especially the first person to ever get it I feel very like you know appreciated."

Senior Athlete: Cindy Windman (marathon runner)

Female Collegiate Award winner: Melissa Holzopfel, Cleveland State University, (Softball)

Female High School: Riley Lavogue, Bay Village High School (Lacrosse)

Sports Development Award: Huntington Convention Center Of Cleveland

Lifetime Achievement Award: Dan Gilbert (Cavaliers owner, businessman, investor, and philanthropist)

Best Moment in Cleveland Sports: Cleveland Guardians 2024 postseason
